While scouring the Yellow Pages and local ads, in the late 90s Darrel Sykes, our owner and founder, saw an opportunity- he decided to start a carpet cleaning business. He found it frustrating to find a reliable and local carpet cleaning firm. This was the dawn of a light bulb moment. In the months that followed, he happened upon an advert for Chem-Dry franchising opportunities; some would call this fate! With no previous experience in operating a business (never mind carpet cleaning!) Darrel made his enquiries and the rest, as they say, is history. Advanced Chem-Dry was born!
The initial few years were difficult, with Darrel working hard to maintain a second job for income. However, once word of the remarkable results he could achieve- plus the carpet-cleaning system’s super-fast drying times- got round, customers started to flock in their droves. Many of these early customers still use us to this day! Enquiries for upholstery cleaning soon followed. Darrel noticed that, although carpet cleaning services were becoming more abundant, there was a dire shortage of specialists in upholstery cleaning. With entrepreneurial vigour and an eye for meeting customer demand, Darrel set about diversifying. Fortunately, Chem-Dry were ahead of the game and already set up to provide training and specialist machinery to facilitate this expansion.
In the following years with a growing customer base and rapidly developing reputation for providing professional and expert level carpet and upholstery cleaning, Darrel found it difficult to keep up with demand. Employing his very dear, long-term friend David, a cleaning super-duo was born. The two worked closely together for very many years, even starring together in BBC One’s Disaster Masters, in which cameras followed them at work on fire and flood restoration incidents.
With the Chem-Dry parent company changing hands a little while back and deciding we’d like to start offering other services to our customers, we decided it was best to re-brand ourselves, so since April 2023, we’ve been known as Northern Cleaning Solutions!
The company, built on an ethos of providing the best service (in our opinion in the world) to every customer, continued to go from strength to strength, earning an excellent reputation within our local region. We continued to add more skills such as leather cleaning, curtain cleaning, rug cleaning and more specialised environment cleaning. It was not long before insurance companies started to use Northern Cleaning Solutions for stain removal on carpets, radiator leaks and bad odour removal. We found increasing demand from insurance companies for drying and cleaning following property floods and fires. Ever the innovator, Darrel soon set about establishing the restoration side of the business. Now working alongside many major insurance companies, this is an area of the company which has continued to grow.
Many commercial customers also started to use us for carpet cleaning. Perhaps the most notable of these was the football stadium in Huddersfield, who are still one of our longest standing commercial customers. The acquisition of this customer was particularly poignant to Darrel- a lifelong Huddersfield Town fan. In recent years, commercial carpet cleaning has become something of a speciality for Northern Cleaning Solutions. We found that businesses struggled to find a reliable and professional firm capable of carrying out large-scale cleaning works. We have developed strong working relationships with our clients. Our aim is always to help out where we can, ensuring we add value. Working alongside some of Yorkshire’s biggest companies, we can undertake any cleaning challenge no matter what the size!
